What is the liability when cashing a check, that could be fake?

I received a check in the mail, probably a scam, but I really need to money. Can I cash it? The letter with it said it was lottery winnings...

Ask yourself this: Did you enter a lottery? No. It%26#039;s a scam, you%26#039;ll have to pay bank fees, and you%26#039;ll have to pay the bank back the amount on the check.

Not to mention, there could be legal problems as well.

you might get in trouble

you might not
Reply:It%26#039;s DEFINITELY a scam.

If you try to cash it, and the bank doesn%26#039;t notice at first that it%26#039;s fake, they may give you the money for it. Once they figure out that you gave them a bad check, they WILL come after you for all of their money bacl (plus any fees they may charge).

Also, remember that it is a crime to knowingly pass a fraudulent check.
Reply:If something seems too good to be true, it usually is. In this case, if you didn%26#039;t enter a lottery then you couldn%26#039;t have won, so please don%26#039;t cash the check, you%26#039;ll lose much more money than you%26#039;ll gain, it%26#039;s a scam. (Really sucks to get one of those when you are in need of money, isn%26#039;t it?)
Reply:If you do not remember entering a lottery you have been lied to, and it is a scam. The check is certainly worthless. If you cash it you will have to repay the bank, plus fees for having presented a dishonored check.

Did the check come from Nigeria ??Are you to pay any fees for processing your %26quot;winnings%26quot;??
